NetStar updates network for National Gallery of Victoria

23 June 2003

NetStar Group, a leading IP network solutions provider today announced that it has won a contract to provide a new communications network which will allow visitors to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) greater access to artworks.

The Gallery is currently located in the Public Records Office in North Melbourne. However new premises are being prepared at two other locations, and in the near future NGV will be operating out of all three sites. NGV will be employing the upgraded network infrastructure to connect these sites and to support applications such as video streaming, video conferencing and IP (Internet Protocol) telephony.

“NetStar proposed a solution that would significantly reduce long term costs and would be adaptable to our future needs for years to come,” said Leon Sayers, Information Technology Manager, National Gallery of Victoria. “We wanted a solution that wouldn’t require upgrading in the short term, and a switched IP-based network was the obvious choice.”

Due to space restrictions in the display areas the National Gallery of Victoria is taking an innovative, interactive approach to provide visitors with greater access to artwork using video streaming. Artworks will be digitized and made accessible to visitors via touch screens located throughout the gallery.

“NGV has more Australian art permanently on display than any other gallery in the world, and will be using the newly implemented network to give visitors access to much more than any one single physical space can provide,” Sayers said.

Ken Boal, State Manager for NetStar in Melbourne, added “We have an enviable track record in integrating and supporting IP telephony and converged network environments, which is one of the reasons NGV selected NetStar as their partner. We look forward to a long-term relationship with NGV, as we work together to further extend the functionality of their IP-based infrastructure.”
