ninemsn moves to IP Telephony with NetStar

5 December 2006

ninemsn, Australia's number-one interactive media company, has replaced its traditional telephone system with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology across its Australian offices with the help of NetStar Australia, a leading IP network and managed solutions provider.

ninemsn, a joint venture between PBL and Microsoft, is one of Australia's most popular online destinations. The media company’s key aim was to replace its outdated PABX system and chose to work with Cisco Gold Partner NetStar to take advantage of the cost benefits and flexibility VoIP.

“Our new telephone system needed to be flexible enough to cope with a constantly evolving company,” said Nick Spooner, Chief Operating Officer, ninemsn. “We are a fast-paced, innovative organisation and felt that VoIP was the logical answer to replace our old PABX telephone system.”

With over 250 employees based in Sydney and Melbourne, ninemsn has implemented Cisco Softphone IP Communicators and Cisco Call Manager. The new Cisco IP Solution combines voice and data, and in the future will also provide Unified Messaging functionality.

It is expected that the system will deliver cost savings on inter-office calls, improved flexibility to allow for changes to the phone configurations, lower technical support and maintenance costs and the ability to implement new collaboration tools.

“The new VoIP system will result in cost savings for ninemsn, and we are already benefiting from the flexibility it provides us when our people move desks or offices,” said Nick Spooner. “Our employees will also benefit from more integrated communications such as being able to receive voicemail in their email inbox.”

To date, the number of telephony related technical problems has been reduced and there is much less downtime as a result of the implementation of the New VOIP infrastructure.

ninemsn considered a number of vendors before it decided to select NetStar as its preferred implementation and maintenance partner.

“Replacing a telephony system is a challenging project to undertake and we were impressed by the degree of professionalism displayed by NetStar not only in the planning but also the implementation phase,” said Mr Spooner.

“NetStar has a great working relationship with ninemsn and is excited to be involved with such an innovative and forward thinking Australian company,” said Oliver Descoeudres, NetStar Australia’s Marketing Director.
