University of Melbourne Replaces its Core Network and Moves Towards Convergence

7 June 2007

The University of Melbourne has selected NetStar to replace its entire core network, which is the first phase in a $25m total network refresh strategy.

The new infrastructure will move the University of Melbourne towards its goal of creating a converged network capable of delivering a wider range of services such as voice and video, in a highly available and secure environment. The University of Melbourne has awarded this contract to NetStar after a rigorous selection and tender process, recognising NetStar’s proven ability as a trusted Cisco Gold Partner coupled with their flexible and collaborative approach. The University’s network refresh strategy will include a review of its current network management policies.

The solution is based on a Multi Protocol Label switching (MPLS) core which will be delivered across 76 x 6500 Cisco Catalyst Series Chassis based switches through 2007 and 2008. The project, which commenced in October 2006, will see NetStar responsible for the supply, design, implementation and ongoing support of the new core network infrastructure based on Cisco Advanced Technologies.

The University of Melbourne’s Vice Principal of Information, Linda O’Brien said: “We selected NetStar as our integration partner for the Core Network Renewal project due to their track record supported by high profile reference customers that supported their ability to deliver and support complex projects of this nature. This project will enable the University to deliver a greater learning experience, through enhanced services being made available to faculties, departments, staff and students.”

NetStar’s network management platform – “nVisage” – will provide the foundation for delivering a broad range of tailored and unique support services to the University. A proactive maintenance service will complement the University’s existing monitoring and management services provided in-house, and give the University around the clock access to local and remote technical expertise via NetStar’s Global NetCentre.

The Core Network Renewal project is one of a number of network related projects as the University continues to refresh and renew current network management policies, practices and procedures as well as performing the network hardware technology refresh.

The full value of the refresh strategy will be realised when the new management practices and procedures are fully integrated with normal everyday business operations.

The new infrastructure will move the University of Melbourne towards its goal of creating a converged network capable of delivering a wider range of services across the university such as voice and video, in a highly available and secure environment.

“NetStar is delighted to be working with the University and excited to be delivering on such an important landmark project. Our “Total Lifecycle Approach” to delivering solutions based on Cisco Advanced Technologies will ensure success for the project.” said Chris Meager, Managing Director of NetStar Australia. “This is just the first phase of a major technology refresh that will deliver significant benefits to the University’s staff and student population, and we look forward to a successful long-term partnership” he continued.
